Sun damage is the number one cause of skin aging in men. In fact, 90% of the features of aged skin is attributable to the sun’s harmful UVA rays. When UVA rays hit the skin, a sequence of cellular reactions leads to breakdown of collagen, elastin and other skin proteins. These proteins contribute to the tone and elasticity of skin. When they are damaged over time wrinkles, sun spots and a rough texture result.
Laser resurfacing for sun damage is an ideal procedure for a man with sun damage on the facial skin because it gives predictable and consistent results that last 5-10 years. What’s more, the recent advances in technology have dramatically decreased the downtime (from 3 weeks to 3 days) without decreasing the effectiveness. Men really appreciate the fact that it is a “one and done” procedure. In other words, instead of having a less powerful sun damage treatment once per month for 6 or eight months, they can get it done in one quick 60 minute trip to Vorteil.
Since men’s skin is 30% thicker than women’s, different laser settings are used to obtain the optimal result. In addition, our board-certified dermatologists know the unique techniques and methods that work best for men.
After you have a consultation with one of our board certified dermatologists and it’s determined that you are an appropriate candidate for laser resurfacing, the procedure will be booked at a later date (typically 3-14 days). Vorteil recommends that you discontinue any Retin-A creams at least 1 week prior to the procedure. Limiting the amount of sun exposure is also important in the days to weeks before the procedure. This means daily application of broad-spectrum sunscreen (like Vorteil’s V-age defense) with an SPF of 30.
When you arrive at Vorteil, your comfort is our number one priority. You will be welcomed by our friendly staff and offered a refreshing beverage. Our treatment rooms have ocean views and/or flat screen TV’s to view on-demand movies. All measures are taken to provide you with the best experience possible.
The board-certified dermatologist will then administer topical numbing medication as well as local anesthetic injections to reduce the discomfort of the procedure. A prescription medication can also be taken orally to help relax during the procedure.
After the facial skin is fully numb, the laser procedure begins. Our board-certified dermatologist performs the laser resurfacing treatment, not a nurse or technician. The procedure takes about 30 minutes to complete, at which time a calming cream is applied to the skin to speed recovery.
Although the risk for infection is very low, you will still be prescribed antibiotics to take twice per day for 1 week to decrease this risk further. For the first 3 days after the procedure, you will look like you have experienced a really bad sunburn. For the next 4-7 days, the facial skin will be pink and peeled. Avoiding the sun and applying the calming cream will speed up this process. Most guys take 2-3 days off work if they work in public, whereas guys who work at home resume work the next day. To ensure proper healing, your first follow-up appointment is 2-3 days after the procedure. Should you have any questions or concerns, you will have 24 hour phone access to our staff.
